Tabernash Hat Company Collections of alpaca, wool, and fur felt

Each Tabernash collection begins with a different fiber, but all are shaped by the same commitment to time-honored processes. Whether rare, traditional, or expressive - made for fashion or function - every piece is built to your specifications and lifestyle.

Alpaca

Alpaca

  • A luxury fiber
  • Entirely handcrafted - from fluff to fashion
  • Extremely insulating
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Sustainable/animal-friendly
  • Priced from $600

This is where it all began for us. Cowgirl Magazine found out and labeled our alpaca western hats “the new kid in town."

Our alpaca hats begin at the source: fiber ethically raised, shorn, and transformed entirely by hand at the Silver Spur Ranch in Tabernash, Colorado. Unlike most traditional felts, each piece is built from sustainable, animal-friendly raw fiber, handmade through a process that favors time, pressure, heat and precision over modern shortcuts.

The result is a material that feels distinct: unbelievably lightweight and yet somehow extremely insulating. The actual hat material is made here at the ranch. The hat is blocked, shaped, sewn and finished here at the ranch. And, although we cannot perform this process while you wait, it can often be sent to you in 4-6 weeks from ordering date.

You won’t find many with a hat like this (although we have shipped alpaca hats from coast to coast and several European countries).

It’s durable; we’ve rebuilt alpaca hats that have been sent down the river. We’ve also cleaned and reshaped hats that hunters bring back in year after year for an overhaul. But, it’s also a soft fiber, so it requires some coddling.

These hats are valued for their uniqueness. This is not a common material that hats are made from…and it doesn’t wear like a common hat.

Sheep

Wool / Blends

  • Highly versatile
  • Beautiful colors
  • Completely customizable
  • Blends offer increased durability
  • Studio stock has multiple options to try on
  • Priced from $169

Our wool collection is where craftsmanship meets individual expression. Each piece is hand-shaped and finished in our studio, offering a balance of structure, style, and everyday wearability at an affordable price.

Wool carries a quiet familiarity. Substantial enough to hold its form, yet flexible enough to adapt to how it’s worn. Over time, it develops character without losing its integrity. And, as all good hats, it can be shaped and reshaped time after time.

It feels right from the start: structured, dependable, and easy to make your own. We offer quite a variety of wool and wool blend hats, and will be happy to walk you through the ins-and-outs of whether you’d be happier with a 3x, 5x or wool blend.

The wool collection also opens the door to customization. From crown shape to brim, banding to finish, each detail can be refined to reflect your style while guided by our experience.

These hats can be created while you watch us work our magic in the barn studio or the mobile hat trailer. They come in traditional colors like silver belly, chestnut and black, but can also be obtained in stunning colors like turquoise, moss and hunter orange.

We also have a selection of ready-made OOAK (one of a kind) dress weight wool hats available for quick purchase. These are generally unlined quick fashion-type hats. Great for matching that special outfit or when a custom hat doesn’t fit the current budget.

For many, this is where the relationship with a great hat begins.

Alpaca

Fur / Blends

  • From traditional beaver to rare exotics
  • Water resistant
  • Durable and maintainable
  • Fully customized inside and out
  • Traditional and heirloom quality
  • Priced from $650

You know the lore; pure beaver is the “one and only” material for a true cowboy hat. The problem is that most folks don’t know anything about current industry rating systems or ultimately what they are buying.

Crafted from premium hare, beaver, mink, nutria, chinchilla…or a blend, fur felt hats represent the highest level of traditional hatmaking and shaping. Dense, velvet smooth, and naturally water-resistant, furs are known for the ability to hold shape while maintaining a refined finish over time. They are also highly restorable.

There’s a weight to it. Not heavy, but certain. A structure that holds without being plastic or overly rigid. A finish that speaks without needing to be explained.

IYKYK. It’s a difference you can feel. A value you understand and are willing to sacrifice for.

When being made from a processed hat body, it will be blocked, shaped, sewn and finished by hand, ensuring a level of precision and durability that stands up to years of wear.

If we are shaping a fur hat for you, you’ll be able to pass it on through the generations. The first option we will need time to produce. The second, you can watch us create your masterpiece while you visit our studio. But, do be advised that often we carry only a limited about of stock here at the ranch, and ordering often takes time, so it’s best to call ahead and discuss what you have in mind.

For those who truly understand hats, no other introduction is necessary. For those who don’t, come on in and we’ll educate you and talk more about this investment.

"I came into the process thinking I knew what I wanted, but once I started working with Deb, I realized how much I didn’t know. And that ended up being the best part of it.

She walked me through the different materials in a way that made it easy to actually feel the differences. The alpaca was incredibly soft and lighter than I expected, the wool felt solid and dependable, and the fur felt had this structure and presence to it that you notice immediately.

What surprised me most was how easy the whole process felt. Deb has a way of guiding you without ever making it feel complicated or overwhelming. She listens, makes thoughtful suggestions, and helps you land on something that feels like your own decision (just a better one than you would have made on your own).

By the end of it, I wasn’t just buying a hat. I understood why I was choosing it. After the hat was made and I was able to finally put it on, it felt like something that had already been mine for years."
